For the Love of June
A monthly list of recommendations + 3 things that were great for vacation
Welcome to the For the Love of series. If you are new here, this is a monthly roundup of stuff…some to read, some to listen to and other random delights. You can check out previous posts with links and recommendations here.
Welcome back to the monthly roundup of links and other things. How is it already the end of June? Since school has gotten out, we have vacationed, survived a power outage during the hottest week in a long time and eaten our weight in popsicles. Basically, summer things. For our vacation we went back in time, see photo evidence below.
We actually stayed in 2024 and had a great time playing in a lake, hiking, and seeing creatures (including a mama bear with 3 cubs). And we found this magical phone booth that one of my children called “a phone from the olden days”.
Stuff to read
The book pick of the month is When You Care: The Unexpected Magic of Caring for Others* by
. I’ve loved getting into this book and having it stir up my brain over the last week. I am sure some of those thoughts will show up in a future newsletter. I highly recommend you check it out. If you would like to read more about the book, you can check out an interview here with who writes Think of the Children.Need to laugh about the craziness of summer camp emails? Check out this one from
of The Double Shift.I definitely have “mom-nesia”. Check out this one from
of Living the In-Between TimesThis one is a serious one but important,
of Is My Kid the Asshole? shares some important information about drowning. Read it here. This was a generous piece on the experience of military spouses by
of What Moves You. Check it out here.
Stuff we enjoyed on vacation
Mad Libs: Who doesn’t love Mad Libs? The Junior version is easier to do with younger kids. In order to include the pre-schoolers I would give them two words to pick from, silliness ensued and it was good.
Wikki Stix: We got these last year for a plane trip and were floored by how helpful they were. They were just as much a hit this year. Not messy, can be used for a range of ages and easy to travel with.
The Ramona Quimby Audio Collection by Beverly Cleary: This is the first time we have been successful with univerally accepted audiobook for all our different ages and interests. I’ve enjoyed revisiting these stories and it has been interesting to hear them as a parent. I will be sharing more about what Ramona can teach parents in a future newsletter. Also it’s narrated by Stockard Channing which is just wonderful.
